I wanted it transfered as a christmas present for my aunt as she and my mom used to go to this bands gigs together.

I recently commissioned John to digitise a very fragile 78 record (acetate on aluminium).

The recording was made in 1945 by my grandfather while he was serving in India and is in extremely poor condition, bent out of shape with peeling coating. 

John was somehow able to pull off the impossible and both extract the entire recording and greatly improve its clarity, while causing no damage at all to the coating.

Looking at the record, you wouldn't believe it were possible! 

I am so happy to be have been able to hear my grandfather’s voice for the first time, and hugely grateful to John for his expertise and attention to detail that has made that possible.

And all at a very reasonable price! I cannot recommend John highly enough.

The original recording was not brilliant as we did not have all the acoustics of to-day back in those old days!

However, the CD certainly brought back many memories of when it was made in my happy days of prep school way back in the mists of time.

Hi John,

I've finally had a chance over the last couple of days to give distortion a run through on a couple of devices, and I cannot believe the quality of not only the audio but how you present the finished product and how quickly you were able to get it done.

As I don't have the means to play the record, I'd only been able to stream the studio version and hear the live version on youtube and the difference is night and day to the point that your studio transfer version is clear enough that I can pick out all the different guitarists which was impossible with the streamed version. And to finally hear the FLAC download show, without youtubes compression butchering the sound was truly the icing on the cake! 

As I said I'm amazed at the quality of your work and cannot thank you enough, so you will be highly recommended if anyone asks or I need any more conversion work done.

Just to let you know that the first master tape from my collection has been used by ‘Universal’ on the bonus B sides compilation LP which was included in the 6xLP box set released last November.

It's a recording you did from the master cassette called ‘Truth Hits Everybody’ remix? Well your raw high quality recording was remastered at 'Abbey Road' and pressed onto the LP as the vinyl only track. It was not in Universals library and turns out the studio cassette is the only surviving master. A digital download is also available of your recording. If you want a copy then your more than welcome so your recording is now on a worldwide “Police” release.

"Double Dutch" LP and CD received today John and playing the CD now.

Brilliant recording, lovely presentation and fantastic quick service.

I recorded quite a few of my vinyl LP's a long time ago, sadly not to WAV format and before the days of FLAC and cheap disk storage space. Trusting vinyl sales on the web is a bit risky but this has turned out really well for my first experience. If I find any other "holes" in my collection that can only be replaced in this way I will certainly come to you for this service.

The quality is amazing. To hear my father’s voice as a 22 year old young man is just the loveliest thing. I was quite surprised to hear him preaching in this way. Can I ask, was the hymn on one side of the record and the sermon on the other side - so about 7 minutes in total? Seems like a lot of trouble to go to for such a short thing but I guess that was the way it was in those days in 1947.

I had an old but very precious vinyl LP that I hadn't used for years. It dated back to my childhood.

Recently I discovered Shaw Sounds and John kindly recorded the vinyl LP onto CD disc for me.

The results are truly amazing! The quality of sound is excellent - you would never know that the original LP is nearly 50 years old!

Also the CD is beautifully presented - the cover is a miniature replica of the LP album. I would definitely recommend Shaw Sounds to my friends and family.

File safely received, and I am delighted. The recording quality is
better than I had expected, and it is a fine memorial to our late
Organist Emeritus. He gave the recital two years after he retired
after 37 years as Organist of St Peter's Nottingham. The organ broke
down irretrievably some ten years later and was replaced using only a
little of the existing pipework, so it is good to have a record of the
old instrument. I shall have hours of fun (?!) editing it into
separate tracks.

We were very excited to listen to my Uncle Mac's voice from 1943.  I never met him as he died in January 1944 after returning from England in July 1943.  It occurred to me when I was filing everything that this old voice record travelled a lot of miles ... from England to New Brunswick, Canada, from New Brunswick to Nova Scotia, to England again and back to Nova Scotia.  Remarkable!!!

Dear John.

The Mahler 2 disc arrived and I have just finished listening to it. It sounds excellent.  Shaw Sounds have done a very good job of the re-mastering. They seem to have given it more space so that you feel you are listening to the performace from the mid stalls. And what a thrilling performance it is!

Regarding the source, the CD was my dubbing from a play back on my old 1959 Ferrograph machine (on which the original recording was made) which is now in need of a major overhaul. I made the best job I could of the transfer but was aware of imperfections such as patches of pitch instability and had always assumed that a fresh dubbing from the tape on a modern recorder would be necessary. Your resulting disc is very good -  it all seems very secure.

I got the tape-recorder back this afternoon and it is up and running...it sure is great to hear it playing properly for the first time. It also plays the cassettes I recorded on the other Revox B215 faultlessly and needless to say, sounds terrific, the quality sound is a joy to behold.

I don't suppose they would have been marvellous recordings from a machine anyway. It was very interesting to listen to what Roy had to say (one thing was that the Voice O Graph records cost him 25 cents each!). Yesterday (New Year's Eve) the postman brought a Special Delivery packet from Shaw Sounds. What prompt and efficient service - over Holiday Week too!

I was delighted to find it contained the copy of my Mother's Voice Record together with the original aluminium disc. My daughter arrived shortly afterwards and we were able to listen to your CD together. Even with the inevitable imperfections of fairly primitive recording technology, that voice from 80 years ago was, amazingly, instantly recognisable to us both. Her melodramatic delivery of Shakespeare's Sonnet No73 rounded off with God Save the Queen and a sonorous "Amen" brought back her irrepressible sense of fun. Thank you for your skill in making available to us this teenage Great Grannie !

Only a minute long - but one that will be treasured by all her family. She was much loved

and actor as I think I may have told you .. and so I have been working

in professional recording studios for half a century .. so (with my hearing

perfectly  .. and I cannot hear ANY fidelity loss.  NO loss of audio quality

from the Verve LP recording done in 1958 (Which in 1958 wasn't actually

What an absolutely amazing service you provide. Such a quick turn around as well. I didn't expect them for at least a couple of weeks.

 

I have been collecting 'Andy Stewart's' recordings for a long time. He made over 40 LP records and many singles throughout his life. A career interrupted by many bouts of poor health and finally cut short by his untimely death aged 59 in 1992.  Much of his latter stuff was released on CD but a lot from the 60's and 70's will, no doubt, never see the light of day again.

I have not had a turntable in the house for years and had forgotten about many of the tracks on the records.

I knew Andy personally, the last few years of his life, and I'm sure he would of been pleased at your marvellous efforts as well.

I couldn't be happier with the results!

I'd like to take the opportunity of thanking you once again for another splendid remastering service in converting Peter Hurford's Pachelbel organ works from LP to CD. Proves in my mind that Johann Pachelbel ought to be remembered as more than a 'one hit wonder' with his famous Canon and Gigue which supposedly underpins the catchy melody in Kyle Minogue's 'I should be so lucky' according to Pete Waterman.

 

The ability to reacquaint myself with this programme and Dr Hurford's choice of registrations and brilliant performance technique notwithstanding (now virtually distraction free plus the relative ease of individual track selection) makes one appreciate how far technology has progressed since the long playing record provided the primary means of sound reproduction.

 

That said I still find it absolutely astonishing that such a good Teldec DDM pressing and Decca's enviable international reputation in the field of sound capture and acoustic balance. Created from an early digital master tape such impressive results which only become truly apparent following CEDAR reprocessing. I would also not wish to make light your skilled contribution as audio engineer coupled to acute hearing which must always acts as the final arbiter.

Thank you very much for the master CD made from my old "Voice Record" metal disc. I am very pleased with your results and like the rich warm tones of the spoken voice. How on Earth did you manage to track the stylus over those corrosion spots? Amazing !

 

I have two other discs - 'Calibre Auto Recording' records made in the 1970s. Both are of vinyl, play at 45rpm and are single sided. I tried to play one on my turntable but could get no sound from it. They do have recorded sound on them as they were played on other equipment in the past. I will send them to you today.

I spent ten years in the Hendon Band followed by a further ten years with the GUS Band
(world famous at that time), where I played in many BBC Radio and TV recordings.

Each time I bought our tapes to you, starting about three years ago, I feared they would
have deteriorated far too much for you to work with them and was prepared for the worst.
However, with your expertise, including dusting most of them down etc., you fully recovered all  the music from the tapes - not only that, but the sound quality was even better than we had ever hoped for.

Not only is our music and family get-togethers preserved, but we have so much more
pleasure in listening to them, including in the car as we travel.

Hi John,

I would just like to say a very big thank you for the excellent reel to reel to CD transfer process.

Given that the reels were 40-50 years old and many were entirely unlabelled I had assumed that the quality of recovered audio would be poor and that there would be few useful recordings. My assumptions could not have been more incorrect. As part of my profession I work with audio recordings on a day to day basis and I can say without doubt that the quality of the recovered audio was astonishingly good. I was also very pleased that the number of useful recordings was far higher than expected, hence I am extremely grateful that I took the risk and asked for unlabelled reels to be converted as well as labelled reels. 

The net result is that my family now has a window into the past that would have otherwise sat in a box and degraded over time. Listening to the audio has been an emotional and sometimes painful experience for myself and my family, but very much worth it. My mother (in her 70s) described the audio as "the best present ever", we last heard my fathers voice more than twenty years ago.

 

If you have a box of reel to reel tapes sitting in a box gathering dust I urge you to have them converted into a digital format and I would not hesitate to recommend John Shaw's exceptional service. The quality of the results and the speed of delivery both greatly exceeded my hopes and expectations.

Just a short line to thank you for your CD version of my Grandfather's record.

 

I was very conscious of the high noise level and low audio of the original scratched recording, but you have managed to make it not just comfortable but pleasant to listen too.

 

My cousin who had the original record said she and her daughter were moved to tears at hearing our Grandfather singing "Trees".

It was recorded almost sixty years ago before I was born and he died almost 40 years ago but I can recognise and remember the sound of his voice from this now.

 

It is a very valuable memento which I am copying to all the family and which includes those living now in Canada. It will be treasured and passed on down the generations I am sure.

overall sound point of view,- it used to be the case that if you transferred musical sound from one media to another you always lost sound quality... your equipment seems to have built-in safe guards here ?

A huge 'Thank You' for transferring my old records on to CDs. I am absolutely delighted with them - I listened to them for hours yesterday when I received them­. The Howell's School 78 records were made in 1952 or 1953. It was strange listening to myself as one of the soloists - I was the soloist singing to the harp accompaniment, -  (and chorister) after all this time! Then, of course, the three records made in St. Clare's Convent School (1967, 1968 and 1970)  were when I was the accompanist/conductor/Music Teacher!! - again very happy memories­­.

I was absolutely astonished when your parcel safely arrived on the following Monday, all

complete and ready to play. Also, I discovered that there was no need to worry that new CD's could ever sound as good as the original vinyl, well yours do.

For me, the one that is the most remarkable is The Shepherd's Song by The Tony Osborne Sound.  As I said to you, the quality of the recording on the single had always been poor. I wouldn't recognise the CD as having come from that record.

 

I was also very impressed with the covers you produced, and the trouble you took with those which were taken from LPs.  I suppose to say that they are incredibly professional isn't quite the right thing to say, but I hadn't expected anything like this.
